SUMMARY:The Schuylkill Navigation Canals of Chester County\, Lecture by Sandy Sorlien
DESCRIPTION:Back by popular demand!  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSandy Sorlein\, photographer and author of Inland: The Abandoned Canals of the Schuylkill Navigation\, will be joining us for her talk “The Schuylkill Navigation Canals of Chester County” and book signing. Co-sponsored by The Schuylkill River Heritage Center\, this lecture will cover the fascinating history behind the now abandoned Schuylkill Canal System\, also known as “The Navigation”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Navigation carried more than a million tons of coal a year along its 108-mile inland waterway from Port Carbon to Philadelphia. After the 1846 system-wide enlargement\, there were 27 canals\, 32 dams\, and 71 locks in operation. It gradually fell into disuse\, until the 1930s when it was abandoned. Though now largely hidden\, its industrial legacy is still important and its structures impressive. Chester County is home to some of the best remaining infrastructure.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSandy Sorlein is a native of Philadelphia\, grew up in Montgomery County\, and lived 27 years near the Manayunk Canal. In addition to being a writer\, Sandy works as an environmental photographer at Fairmount Water Works\, and designs outdoor tours throughout the Schuylkill Valley. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Early registration recommended. Space is limited. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrench & Pickering Members enjoy early priority access until March 31st\, when registration opens to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease consider becoming a French & Pickering 2023 Member to gain early access to our most popular programs\, or making a donation to French & Pickering. Your support helps us continue to provide free programming to the community. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease complete this form to register: \n\n\n\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:Canal Walk with Sandy Sorlein
DESCRIPTION:Following the success of her November Canal Walk\, Sandy Sorlein is back for another captivating Schuylkill Navigation System canal walk. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVisit sites along the 19th-century Schuylkill Navigation System in Chester County\, principally Laurel Locks 52-52 and Towers’ Lock 58 on the Vincent Canal. The Navigation\, also known as the Schuylkill Canal\, carried more than a million tons of coal in a peak year along its 108-mile inland waterway from Port Carbon to Philadelphia. After the 1846 system-wide enlargement\, there were 27 canals\, 32 dams\, and 71 locks in operation\, and Chester County has some of the best remaining infrastructure.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLaurel Locks Farm is a surpassingly beautiful place with views of the Schuylkill River from its elevated towpath. The locks’ ruins include an intact lower chamber and replica gate\, a partial upper chamber\, a lock tender’s house\, and the remains of the original 1820s lock. There is also a small intact aqueduct\, called Price’s Culvert. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTowers’ Lock has substantial fascinating ruins in the woods\, and a Vincent Dam abutment with a datestone. We will add other stops on the Girard or Vincent Canal if time permits\, such as Towpath Park\, Pigeon Creek Aqueduct\, Setzler’s Aqueduct\, or Lock 57. Wear hiking shoes and protective pants. A walking stick may be helpful. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSandy Sorlein is a photographer and writer\, the author of the book Inland: The Abandoned Canals of the Schuylkill Navigation\, published by George F. Thompson in 2022. She is a native of Philadelphia\, grew up in Montgomery County\, and lived 27 years near the Manayunk Canal. She works as an Environmental Photographer at the Fairmount Water Works\, and designs outdoor tours throughout the Schuylkill Valley. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED. Early registration recommended. Space is limited. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFrench & Pickering Members enjoy early priority access until March 31st\, when registration opens to the public. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPlease consider becoming a French & Pickering 2023 Member to gain early access to our most popular programs\, or making a donation to French & Pickering.
